Karen van der Zanden is Data & AI Ecosystem Orchestrator at TNO. She designs and orchestrates public-private ecosystems in which companies, governments and knowledge institutions collaborate on the societal and economic challenges of tomorrow. Her expertise lies at the intersection of data, AI, data governance, digital transformation, sustainable digitalisation and ecosystem development.
Within TNO, Karen initiates and connects strategic partnerships that help organisations tackle complex challenges together and bring innovations to practice faster. She believes that the greatest breakthroughs do not arise within a single organisation, but in ecosystems where knowledge, technology, talent and investment come together. What drives her work is not the technology itself, but the collaboration needed to realise lasting impact.
With a background in strategy, innovation and public-private collaboration, Karen moves at the intersection of government, business and science. She helps organisations translate shared ambitions into concrete initiatives and new coalitions. Her approach is connective, strategic and action-oriented: from ambition to collaboration, and from collaboration to lasting impact.
AI is changing not only how organisations work, but also how countries and regions compete. The Netherlands has everything it needs to maintain a leading position in Europe — but only if government, business and knowledge institutions move forward together.
After a brief introduction on the strategic significance of AI and the need for collaboration, we explore five critical challenges for a strong Dutch AI ecosystem: compute, talent, data, capital and AI adoption. Participants then work in small groups on one of these themes, mapping out the key bottlenecks and opportunities and formulating concrete actions for the next 100 days.
We close in plenary by bringing the outcomes together and identifying which initiatives can be advanced collectively.
